About University of Tasmania
The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is an international university working out of Tasmania. The University was founded by an Act of the Tasmanian Parliament on 1 January 1890, and as the fourth oldest university in Australia they are an original 'sandstone' university. On 1 January 1991, the Hobart-based University merged with its northern neighbour, – more... the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology, to form a 'new' University of Tasmania. UTAS again extended its state-wide representation in 1995, opening the Cradle Coast Campus in Burnie.
UTAS is committed to the creation, preservation, communication and application of knowledge, as well as excellence in all teaching, research and scholarly activities. Their research is integral to their identity and sense of purpose and they are ranked in the top 10 research universities in Australia.
